The original building was destroyed by fire in 1899, a wood-frame bachelor officers’ quarters nicknamed “The Corral”. In 1904, this new brick quarters was completed, later named after General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing, who served briefly at the Presidio, & later became commander of the American Expeditionary Force in France during World War I. This building later served as Visiting Officers’ Quarters for the Presidio until the Army’s departure in 1994. This handsome Georgian Revival red brick building is distinguished by a classically-detailed, two-story porch with wooden Tuscan columns. It has a cruciform plan with two wings with a slightly projecting central pavilion facing Moraga Avenue and a central wing to the rear. It originally housed 18 two-room suites with private baths for unmarried officers. This building was among the first to introduce classically detailed, Georgian Revival designs to the Presidio.Meet the Manager
